Kazakh boxer Abilaykhan Zhusupov has been officially declared the winner of the 2024 Asian Boxing Championship in the 71 kg weight category. This decision was made following the review of an appeal submitted by the Kazakhstan Boxing Federation regarding the outcome of Zhusupov's final match against Uzbek athlete Khavasbek Asadullayev.
Initially, the victory in this intense bout was awarded to Asadullayev by a split decision from the judges. However, during the match, an incident occurred that became the subject of investigation. In one of the clinches, Asadullayev allegedly bit Zhusupov on the shoulder, according to claims from the Kazakh side. Photographic evidence was provided, showing bite marks on the body of the Kazakh boxer.
The International Boxing Association (IBA) and the Asian Boxing Confederation (ASBC) conducted a thorough investigation of the incident, including a review of the match footage and medical reports. As a result, the judges' decision was overturned, and the victory was awarded to Abilaykhan Zhusupov. For Zhusupov, who recently returned to amateur boxing after competing in the professional arena, this victory marks a significant milestone.
Disciplinary actions have been taken against Khavasbek Asadullayev. The athlete has been temporarily suspended from competitions, with the duration of the suspension to be determined later by the IBA Disciplinary Committee.
