The Uzbekistan boxing team has concluded its participation in the Asian Championship in Thailand, securing first place in the overall team standings, even without the presence of five of its Olympic champions. The Kazakhstan team took second place, showcasing a high level of preparation. This result confirms the dominant position of the Uzbek team in the world of amateur boxing at this time.
Prior to the start of the competitions, considering the absence of several key Uzbek boxers, many experts viewed the Kazakhstan team as the main contender for gold. The successful performance of the Kazakhstan women's team the day before also contributed to optimistic forecasts. However, the first final matches demonstrated Uzbekistan's advantage.
In several bouts, the outcome was not obvious, and the judges' decisions sparked discussions, but overall, Uzbekistan achieved a convincing victory with a noticeable margin. In particular, in the match between Sanjar Tashkenbay, the reigning world and Asian champion, and Uzbek Shodiyorjon Melikuziev, a controversial knockdown in favor of Melikuziev became one of the key moments influencing the fight's outcome. Despite this, experts note that Tashkenbay displayed a level below expectations.
In several instances, the judges required additional time to make decisions, using replays of the final segments of the bouts, but this did not alter the overall picture.
One factor affecting the results was the physical conditioning of the Kazakh athletes. In some fights, Kazakh boxers, who started confidently, noticeably slowed down in the second half, ceding the initiative to their opponents. A vivid example is the match of Orazbek Asylkulov against Uzbek Mirazizbek Mirzakhalilov, where Asylkulov dominated the first round but then failed to maintain the high pace and lost to his opponent, who, by the way, employed prohibited techniques several times.
A similar situation occurred in the bout between Dulat Bekbaulov and Uzbek Mujibillo Tursunov in the under 67 kg weight category. Bekbaulov, who started the fight well, lost to his opponent in the final rounds due to decreased activity. The athlete did not hide his disappointment with the result and refused to attend the awards ceremony.
Despite the overall defeat, the Kazakhstan team won four gold medals. Mahmud Sabyrkhan demonstrated significant progress compared to his performance at the Olympics, confidently defeating all opponents, including the final match against Uzbek boxer Shahzod Muzafarov. Bekzat Nurdaulotov (86 kg) also achieved a convincing victory over Jasurbek Yuldoshev from Uzbekistan.
Particular attention should be paid to the successes of the Kazakh heavyweights. Sagyndyk Togambay knocked out Tajik boxer Parviz Karimov in the second round, confirming his high potential. Team captain Aibek Oralbay secured gold in the super heavyweight category, showcasing superiority in this weight class.
Nevertheless, the final score in the championship bouts — 5:2 in favor of Uzbekistan — reflects the current state of affairs in amateur boxing in the region. The coaching staff of the Kazakhstan team will need to analyze the results of the championship and focus on improving the athletes' physical conditioning.
