Citizen of Uzbekistan Ildar Bikchurkin has been living in Kazakhstan without a passport for over a year. His documents were confiscated by Kazakhstani border guards after he was deported from Russia and attempted to cross the border into Kazakhstan, as he told "Current Time."
“I can’t officially get a job anywhere: I have no documents. I also can’t register. I feel like I’m in limbo, as if I’m in captivity,” Bikchurkin shares.
After being detained at the border, he was sent to the Pavlodar region, where a criminal case was opened against him for illegal border crossing. However, according to Ildar, the investigation has dragged on, and his passport has not been returned. The investigator stated that the documents remain with the border service until a response is received from the Russian side.
Ildar was offered illegal work for $6 a day, but he refused: “Everyone knows that I can’t work officially, yet they suggest breaking the law.”
Currently, Bikchurkin relies on the support of friends and is forced to live without the opportunity to work fully or return to his homeland.
“I’m already on the edge. The thought of doing something to myself comes more often,” he confessed.
At the time of publication, no official response had been received from the Kazakhstani border service department.
