Uzbekistan has completed negotiations with the United States regarding its accession to the WTO, reports the press service of the U.S. Trade Representative.
The parties signed the corresponding protocol in Washington. U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai issued a statement reaffirming the Biden-Harris administration's ongoing support for Uzbekistan's entry into the World Trade Organization.
The United States is pleased to announce the conclusion of bilateral negotiations on goods and services market access with Uzbekistan as part of Uzbekistan's efforts to join the WTO, – noted Katherine Tai.
The trade representative also emphasized that Uzbekistan's commitment has been the foundation for significant progress in negotiations and their successful conclusion.
Uzbekistan submitted its application for WTO membership in 1994, after which it began actively working towards accession. The President's Special Representative for WTO Affairs, Azizbek Urunov, noted at the latest meeting of the working group on Uzbekistan's accession in Geneva that 22 countries had already supported Tashkent's application by the time of the new meeting.
Deputy Prime Minister Jamshid Khodjaev confirmed the country's firm intention to advance negotiations with WTO members and to become a full member of the organization by 2026. The U.S. has become the 26th country to support Uzbekistan's accession to the World Trade Organization. For full membership in the WTO, the country needs to sign agreements with an additional 136 participating countries.
Previously, the president mentioned that would grant Uzbekistan membership in the WTO. Significant changes in the agricultural sector are planned in Uzbekistan.
